According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, sales employment opportunities in the wholesale and manufacture sectors are expected to grow by 9 percent between 2006 and 2016. And sales management is expected to increase by 12 percent by 2016. However, competition for these jobs is tough – especially in difficult economic times when job demand outweighs supply. Understanding sales employment trends across major markets can help you position yourself better for your next sales position.
The Changing Roll of Sales People
In tough economic times, the role of the sales person has evolved. To become a successful sales person in the current economic conditions, you must understand your clients much better. This means that more sales professionals are working alongside clients to get a deeper understanding of their challenges.
Although employment in sales requires more commitment, in most cases, the payoffs are worth it. Companies hiring sales employees are willing to pay more to retain top performers. This creates better opportunities for the most talented sales people.
Sales Trend: Fastest Growing Cities
The largest misconception about cities with large populations is they have a lot of sales jobs – which isn’t always true. According to “The Hottest Industries for Sales Jobs,” published by Manage Smarter, the fastest growing cities for sales jobs are Portland, Columbus, Dallas and Chicago.
In addition, the survey found that states in the South and West show the largest hiring activities, with about thirty-eight percent of employers hiring in the West and thirty seven in the South. Overall, forty-seven percent of sales employers are expected to hire new employees. And according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for sales professionals is expected to continue to trend upward.
International Opportunities
Companies are expanding internationally, which provides special sales employment opportunities for sales people with international skills. Having connections to international cultures, and language, can make you more marketable for these opportunities.
Changes in Hiring Needs
Companies in all markets are placing more focus on finding job candidates that are a “cultural fit,” for their company. Before applying to sales positions, take the time to learn more about the company. Determine if you would be an “organizational fit,” and why. Then, rewrite your resume and cover letter to incorporate those attributes. This will set you apart from other job candidates – landing you a job quicker.
