Job Description
This position is responsible for executing automation projects related to the Los Angeles Master Plan (LAMP) involving design and implementation of a process control system. Carry out scope definition /clarification exercises to properly and completely characterize automation requirements. Position responsible for project-related functions including design, specifications, budgeting, scheduling, resource management, construction management, commissioning and start up. Project scope requires an in-depth knowledge of pharmaceutical or food industry process equipment automation related to process control systems, building automation systems, electronic batch records, PLC, OPC, Foundation Fieldbus and DeviceNet technologies, HVAC, purified water systems (RO, WFI) and general working GMP knowledge of pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities and all major utilities. Experience with Plasma purification would be beneficial.
Provide guidance, review and direction as necessary to create relevant and functional Life Cycle documentation and Process Control System code implementation in accordance with cGMPs, Baxter and BioScience Quality Systems standards for commissioning and validation of systems. Provide guidance and direction to contractors so as to meet project schedule and financial goals while ensuring technical success.
Displays standard engineering principles to resolve difficult problems, from conception to final design with team input. Plans, schedules and leads project assignments in the evaluation, selection and adaptation of various engineering techniques, procedures and criteria with minimal guidance.

•Develop and review the automation of process and support equipment and systems, Design Drawings and Documents and Equipment Procurement Packages

•Ensure Process submittals are reviewed and approved for technical content in accordance with project schedule requirements

•Provide guidance and risk assessments regarding requirements for redundancies to equipment, controls and systems.

•Assist and guide the design and requirements of how the validation of the automation system is to be accomplished.

•Communicate/coordinate with Los Angeles Engineering and other departments to ensure successful transfer/integration of design, documents and design intent to the plant.

•With minimal guidance, schedules and leads a team through the planning and execution of a smaller project or defined piece of a larger project. This includes constructing detailed, accurate project schedules, interfacing with development groups and technical support groups.

•Devises new approaches to complex problems through adaptations and modifications of standard technical principles.

•Ability to prioritize multiple tasks.

•Supervises/coordinates an engineer and/or technicians on assigned work.

Job Requirements
qualifications:

•Experience in Distributed Control System implementation, especially DeltaV.

•Familiarity with industry standards for batch control systems, software development life cycle methodologies, 21 CFR Part 11, and GAMP.

•Experience in automation of pharmaceutical or food processing facilities, specifically Plasma fractionation and purification, design, installation and commissioning for projects.

•Expertise in Batch Processing Automation and program design

•Experience and Understanding of the Design, Build and Validation process for large renovations or new facilities.

•Display a solid understanding of theories/practices utilized by other disciplines outside primary area of expertise.

•Proficient in automation design processes.

•Effectively operate in and may facilitate cross-functional teams with guidance.

•Ability to convince management on courses of action with minimal assistance using both written and verbal methods.

•Proficient in reading/review of process P&IDs especially with regard to instrumentation and automation.

•Expertise in instrumentation, Foundation Fieldbus and DeviceNet devices and interfaces and network designs

•Knowledge of how to interface/integrate PLCs and other controllers to a central process control and/or data acquisition system.

•Experience reviewing and creating guidance to specifications for equipment that will be purchased with PLCs or self-contained controls such that they will interface properly with higher level control system

•Experience in CIP and scheduling of Process Operations would be a plus

•Experience implementing Lean Manufacturing concepts a plus.

•B.S. degree in Engineering and 5-9 years of experience, M.S. in Engineering and 3-5 years of experience or Ph.D. in Engineering and 1-3 years experience.

•Demonstrated success in delivering results on several technical challenges.
