Job Description Pioneer Hi-Bred is seeking an experienced microbial physiologist/biochemist to join an established team of scientists in the development of novel microbial products for the inoculation of silage. Initiates, conducts and supervises the execution of comprehensive laboratory- and environmental-based research programs and product development activities within the Forage Additives Research Group, leading to the understanding and timely development of commercial forage additive products and support services. Ensures efficient daily operation of laboratory operations including execution of experiments, collecting, analyzing and reporting of data.
Duties/Responsibilities The successful candidate will investigate the role of microbial cellular processes in the action of silage inoculants to assist in the understanding of how these processes enhance the nutritive value of stored forages for use by the ruminant at the physiological level. Projects will be developed to enhance the knowledge of interactions between microorganisms in silage ecosystem and their effect on the nutritional enhancements. Information from these studies will be used to elucidate the role microbial processes in the degradation and utilization of recalcitrant plant components.
Assumes extensive independent scientific projects relating to selection, physiology, characterization, ecology and mode of action of microbial forage additives. Conducts routine and non-routine experimental procedures in support of Forage Additive Research goals.
Supports Research Coordinator and Forage Additive business in developing and administering experimental strategies to accomplish Forage Additive product line development goals. Summarizes experiments, manages and analyzes data and prepares reports in support of these goals. Assists in the preparation of data summaries and reports relevant to prototype advancement, including patent documents and external publication materials.
Selects and develops solution to product/scientific problems (i.e. choosing the appropriate technology to solve research problems).
Supervises and is accountable for assigned projects and coordinates experiments with internal and external stakeholders. Communicates on a regular basis with internal and external stakeholders.
Maintains or improves efficient work place processes through active participation in daily operations.
May recruit, hire, orient, supervise, and evaluate employee performance. May serve on teams appropriate to specific research project.
Educational Qualifications Desired Master's degree in microbiology with emphasis in microbial physiology, biochemistry, microbial ecology or related field and up to two years of related experience or equivalent amounts of relevant education and experience. Two years experience in laboratory research and/or product development setting. Post-doctoral fellowship may be considered in lieu of experience.
Competencies and Experience Desired Strong hands-on microbiological skills with knowledge and understanding of bacterial physiology and biochemistry with the proven ability to apply this knowledge to practical applications are required.
Demonstrated ability to apply both creative approaches to problem solving and to apply new concepts.
Demonstrated ability to work with limited supervision and to effectively manage others is required.
Strong self-direction and the ability to initiate projects make decisions and solve problems in the area of forage additive research and development is essential.
Interest and familiarity with computer use is essential. Familiarity with statistical analyses is a positive.
Strong interpersonal skills, communication skills and ability to work as productive member in a team environment are mandatory. Ability and desire to be part of a cross-functional team.
