3 Things Hiring Managers Consider Before Interviewing You

Utilizing your job search to perfect your resume and cover letter is a solid use of time, but after the work is done, your fate is in the hands of hiring managers. Identify the key factors potential employers use in determining whether or not a job interview is in your future.

1. Professional Contacts

The idea that it is more about who you know versus what you know does have some merit during the hiring process. When reviewing your application materials, hiring managers pay close attention to your references and mentions of mutual professionals within your network. It is beneficial for potential employers to gain insight on your qualifications, your skills and your work ethic from professionals within the field to lessen the risk when hiring. Spend time during your job search researching social media sites, such as LinkedIn or Twitter, to identify mutual contacts of employees within the company to increase your opportunities and exposure. Let members of your network know that you are applying to a specific company, and request an endorsement or reference to increase your chances of obtaining a job interview.

2. Following Directions

Employers spend ample time constructing a job description and advertisement for each position to attract the most qualified candidates. To increase your chances of a job interview, scour through the directions listed on the advertisement and follow these directions to the letter. A job candidate who misses a crucial step or neglects to include pertinent information or documents is likely to miss out on a request for a job interview. Hiring managers are seeking applicants who can follow directions. This behavior indicates that the candidate is more likely to succeed on the job and adhere to the companies policies and procedures. Show that you are efficient and pay close attention to detail by checking and double-checking the instructions when applying.

3. Stellar Application Materials

Whether or not you receive a job interview relies heavily on your resume, cover letter and application materials. Hiring managers seek candidates who can produce documents that not only outline skills and qualifications but also have that "wow" factor. Brainstorm creative ways to present your accomplishments and skills to capture the attention of potential employers. Include a bulleted list or outline of successes within your chosen field, such as sales goals met, projects completed and client satisfaction testimonials. Make yourself stand out as the ideal professional for the position.

Candidates who can not only follow directions but also show personality and creativity within application materials boost their chances of obtaining a job interview. Spend ample time perfecting your job materials, networking with professionals in the field and researching the company to customize your application to ensure you are chosen as the individual potential employers can't wait to interview.

@Rick thanks for your comment. We stress "keywords" all of the time. There are tons of articles here on our site that address keywords. Thanks again for the reminder that keywords are definitely key to get your resume through the ATS and into the hands of the hiring manager.
