How to Make Time to Build New Skills to Change Careers

Changing careers can be exciting. You can develop more knowledge, meet new people, and gain more experience. On the other hand, it can also be overwhelming. Finding the time to build the skills for a smooth transition is difficult if you already have a busy schedule. Here is some practical advice on making the time to learn the skills you need for your new career.

Take a look at Your Current Schedule

Track your daily activities — work hours, school schedule, family time. Take note of how much time you spend on leisurely things. This exercise helps you identify which activities to make time for and which can be adjusted. 

For example, if you prioritize work hours and family time, you must tune your schedule to fit those activities in. On the other hand, if you spend 3 hours a day watching Netflix, that may be an activity you can pair back on while you build your skills for your new career. 

Set Clear Goals That You Can Achieve

After you set your schedule to fit your priorities, set goals that align with the specific position you’re transitioning to. Identify which skills you’ll need to be successful in your new career. Be realistic about the time it will take to learn these skills so that you manage your time and effort effectively.

For example, if you decide to transfer to a tech position, one of your goals might be learning programming. Dedicate at least an hour each day to learning about the subject. You can read books, watch videos, or take online courses that fit your schedule.

Try Micro-Learning

Micro-learning is an effective strategy that enables you to study and practice in short amounts of time. 

This includes watching 10-minute videos, reading a short article, or practicing an exercise for your position for 15 minutes. By breaking down your lessons, you’ll add flexibility to your schedule. And these micro-lessons will add up over time. With enough consistency, your knowledge and skills will develop significantly.  

Use Technology

Use apps with educational programs for practice. Take online courses to study valuable information related to your desired position. Listen to podcasts that feature advice from experts in the industry you’re going into. Read eBooks on the subjects related to your new career. Connect with people on social media who share your professional interests. The opportunities to learn are boundless. It’s at the convenience of your fingertips. 

Use Resources from Your Current Employer

Your current job may have opportunities you can take advantage of. Talk to your employer, volunteer to participate in projects related to the position or industry you’re trying to get into.  

For example, suppose you’re trying to become a digital marketer. In that case, you can talk to your employer about helping out with managing the company’s social media accounts, helping out with their messages, becoming an employee advocate, and even reaching out to clients. This would give you some practical experience while also showing your employer you have initiative and a strong will to learn. 

If it’s the Career You Want, Make it Happen

You must spend plenty of time to develop the necessary skills to change your career. Although you may have obligations in other areas of your life, consistency is key. Plan, use your resources, and carve out some time every day to learn. Stay focused. You can achieve your goal.
