There’s a lot of competition for applicants, but the same goes for employers. Making your company worthwhile with what you offer to the applicants is one of the biggest steps in getting applicants. Most jobs offer health benefits and paid time off, but what most don’t offer is health insurance for people’s pets. It may sound odd at first but if your company is struggling to stand out with its benefits, will offering pet insurance be what your company needs?

1. Easy way to stand out from the competition

According to the Society for Human Resource Management, around 15% of employers offer pet insurance benefits. Putting the resources into your company to offer these benefits will allow you to stand out that much easier. When pets have health issues, it can get just as expensive as it is for people. Getting a job that’ll will cover some of that cost will be a weight off of your employees’ shoulders, instead of having to worry about their pets health as well as their own.

2. Pets are more common than people realize

According to the 2019-2020 National Pet Owners Survey conducted by the American Pet Products Association, 67% of U.S. households own a pet. Adding pet insurance to your company benefits will open up your business to so many more people. If your higher ups have any doubts about pet insurance not being relevant to most employees, let them know how wrong they are.

3. Make sure to confirm resources

If your company does decide to go through with pet insurance as a benefit, make sure you can actually live up to the promise, Don’t put pet insurance on the job application just for the sake of it, you need to make sure that there’s money to actually support the benefit your offering. If the money is coming from a pet insurance company, you need to make sure that all of what is covered is clear and concise, and applicants fully understand how it works. Don’t promise “100% coverage” when the company only covers 90%.

4. Be careful not to get exploited

With any form of insurance, there are always the select few that try and commit fraud and obtain money that they don’t qualify for. If an employee says that they need pet insurance, make sure they give you the proper paperwork and forms from the vet. It’s a sad reality, but it’d be easy for an employee to claim that their cat has a broken leg and ask for $5,000. There should be a line of paperwork that employees go through to apply for the pet insurance benefits. With proper notes from the vet, adoption papers from the shelter, or even series of pictures and videos to prove that the pet really does exist and lives in their home.
