Is Social Media Changing the Way College Graduates Get Jobs?

In the past, I have written about the pros and cons of social networking. Though I graduated from college when social networking was still on the precipice of making a large impact, I realize that in order to land a job, you have to be creative when putting your best foot forward.

College graduates today are using every tool available to stand out from the crowd of job seekers. One such tool that I highly recommend is an e-portfolio or online presence that's separate from a friend-based site (i.e. LinkedIn or Google+). This site explains new and innovative ways to brand yourself. Increasingly, college graduates are turning to online video sites, such as YouTube, to market to the general public. At first, I thought sites like these would seem gimmicky but it turns out many people have had success finding jobs this way. By visually showcasing your strengths, video resumes show who you are before meeting a potential employer in a traditional interview. Of course, this has potential for disaster; if you come across as aloof or self-involved on a video, this first impression will likely stay with an employer.

Others are using Twitter to get straight to the point and explain to headhunters and companies why they should be hired. In my opinion, these tactics tend to work better in more creative professions (communications, digital media, or fashion, to name a few).
