Leaders, like all professionals, are subject to failure. When you are in a position of power, your shortcomings can have a widespread effect on your employees and the company as a whole. By avoiding these common leadership failures, you can avoid alienating team members and destroying your professional reputation.

Lack of Motivation and Inspiration

One of the main responsibilities of a leader is simple: to lead. Great leaders lead by example, demonstrating the behaviors and attitudes they want from their team members. As such, one of the most egregious professional failures for leaders is a lack of motivation and inspiration. When you fail to instill confidence in your employees, you are failing as a leader. The same goes for withholding encouragement, enthusiasm and praise. Failure to inspire employees is one of the leadership failures that is most likely to lead to resentful, confused and unmotivated teams.

Lack of Humility

When it comes to leadership failures, one of the most damaging is a lack of humility. According to Inc. Magazine, weak leaders believe that they know everything, and as such, are not open to the ideas of others. When you go into a professional situation believing that you have nothing to learn from your employees, you will undoubtedly miss out on valuable insights. Over time, team members are likely to disengage from their jobs and stop presenting new ideas or information. A leader who doesn't provide motivation is likely to wind up with a weak, ineffective team. Great leaders, on the other hand, understand that they need to depend on the knowledge and experience of others to create strong, powerful teams, They involve others in the decision-making processes and come to the table with humility and open minds.

Lack of Communication

In most companies, leaders have bosses to impress and projects to manage. When you're too caught up in your own workload, it can be easy to let communication slide. The lack of open communication is one of the most common leadership failures, one that can have a myriad of negative ramifications. When you don't provide feedback to your team, the members have no way of knowing whether or not their performance is up to par. As a result, they are likely to continue working ineffectively, which can cause delays and lost profits. What's more, you risk creating confusion and running into legal compliance issues. A lack of discussion and dialogue also creates a closed-off work environment that makes collaboration a challenge. When it comes to leadership failures, the failure to communicate is one of the easiest to fall into.

When you hold a position of power, it can be easy to succumb to leadership failures that impact the entire team. By developing a strong sense of self-awareness, you can avoid these common professional failures and improve your leadership skills.
