Landing A Media Sales Job

Posted by

You have decided you want to work in media sales.   Media jobs seem to be plentiful even in this economy. Although media sales can be fun, exciting and the pay is good, not everyone is suited to the job. A lot of people who want to get into media don’t really understand how difficult the job can be. Are you still interested? Well, lets see what you can do to get a media sales job and what you need to be qualified.

Education: Some employers will accept a high school diploma with strong grades in Math and English. If they take you on as a trainee, you’ll go through an induction course so you can effectively sell the product. With some businesses, you will need a college degree. They will want to know what schooling you have completed in the media field and where you went to school. Make sure you apply for the media job you have the skills for since you don’t want to be hired for a job that you can’t do.

Resume: Make sure your resume is current. Have information on it that is pertinent to the job you’re applying for. It should be informative and concise. Your references should be able to give information about your media experience. If you have the right references, it may tip the job in your direction.

Skills: Employers look for certain skills in a media salesperson. You have to have strong negotiation skills, be a hard worker, ambitious and determined. Employers like employees that are dedicated and committed. Being a team player is a must as well as excellent technical ability and a passion for the media.

You: Your personality will sell you. Having a personable character as well as being persuasive and articulate are qualities that employers look for. You will be expected to work late and overtime to meet deadlines. When you have to sell something to a client who can’t touch or feel it but can see and hear it that can be a daunting task. With a media job, you get a lot of rejection so you have to develop thick skin. For every twenty five no’s, you might get a yes. You need to develop your understanding of the media and how to sell the inns and outs of a product to a potential client.

In order to advance, this is a results-orientated industry. You will need to highlight your achievements to climb the career ladder from being a telephone advertising sales executive, to field sales executive, to senior account manager, to sales manager. The sky is the limit in this career field. Are you ready to fly?

If you are in the media field and have any comments, they are always welcome.
